Frikkie and Louise from Highline recently went on an educational trip to find out what the Mountain Kingdom of Lesotho had to offer.

Lesotho is a tiny landlocked Kingdom in Southern Africa. It is a similar size to Belgium and has a population of 2 million. It has made it onto the NY Times Top Destinations list for 2020.

Lesotho Fast Facts

  • Lesotho is ruled by a constitutional monarchy.
  • Nearly two thirds of the country consist of mountains.
  • Lesotho is home to the highest ski resort in Africa, called Afriski.
  • Down the Maletsunyane waterfall, it has the longest commercially operated single-drop abseil of 204m.
  • Lesotho is also known as the “Kingdom of the Sky”.

First on the trip was the Liphofung Historical Site. The Liphofung Historical Site includes a cave that has an important place in Lesotho’s history. The cave was used by San people, and so it contains rock art and Stone Age implements. King Moshoeshoe used the cave as a stopover on his trips around the kingdom. They found the tour very interesting, looking at the rock art was an amazing experience.

The site is located in a tributary-stream valley of the Hololo River, off the main route from Butha-Buthe to Oxbow and Mokhotlong. It is a popular stop for those driving between Maseru or Clarens (South Africa) and Oxbow/Afriski or Sani Top.

The Sani Mountain Pass is a must visit! Driving up to the Sani Mountain Lodge is a harrowing experience but the view is well worth it. The lodge offers breakfast, lunch and supper and the hotel is stunning. Having a drink at 2874m above sea level, you have one foot in South Africa and the other in Lesotho!

Driving around Lesotho can be a breath-taking experience.
